Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials

For a little while now I have been annoyed at the lack of good virus scanners that don’t grind the system to a halt. I used to live by AVG, but it’s recent versions have been a let down, increasingly using more system resources and have become less user friendly.

Microsoft have released their own Free virus scanner which is targeted towards home users. Their new security product provides a very clean interface, a range of settings that would satisfy a power user and best of all it is very lightweight! It’s simple and straight forward to install and the download is less then 10mb. Which you can obtain directly from Microsoft website.

It took no longer then 5 minutes to fully download and install the application. It automatically downloaded the latest virus definitions and set up a scheduled download. I did find that the full system scan was a little slower then I’ve seen with other products. I did however have a few other programs running, which were not affected by the scan running in the background.

I would recommend this anti-virus scanner and tip it to be one of the better offerings as far as free anti-virus protection is concerned.  I just hope that Microsoft work on keeping the program simple and lightweight.  But only time will tell….
